More on Sugar

Sugar, in my opinion, is one of the most difficult substances to eliminate from the diet for a couple of reasons.  First, it seems to be in everything unless you shop at health food stores and even THEN I have to read labels to avoid it.  Secondly, sugar is very, very addicting.  In my last post Dr. Oz explained why it can be addicting.  I would imagine that for some people the thought of eliminating sugar from the diet is scary because what about all of your favorite foods?

It is pretty alarming when you see the amount of sugar that is commonly ingested on a daily basis.  The following is from an article by Dr. Mercola (mercola.com).  I found it interesting:
  • "In 1700, the average person consumed about 4 pounds of sugar per year.
  • In 1800, the average person consumed about 18 pounds of sugar per year.
  • In 1900, individual consumption had risen to 90 pounds of sugar per year.
  • In 2009, more than 50 percent of all Americans consume one-half pound of sugar PER DAY—translating to a whopping 180 pounds of sugar per year!"
1 in 450 children have diabetes and 1 in 6 have some kind of learning disability.  Could part of the problem be the alarming amount of sugar that is ingested?
